The Pittsburgh Steelerettes

Welcome to my photo album!

Few people know that the Pittsburgh Steelerettes were the NFL's very first cheerleaders. In fact, most of today's fans don't know that the Steelers ever had cheerleaders on the field.

The Pittsburgh Steelerettes made their debut at Forbes Field on Sunday, September 24, 1961. The first home game of the season was against the New York Giants and, unfortunately, the Steelers lost 14-17.

The Steelerettes made NFL history in 1961. By the mid to late '60s the idea had caught on and many professional football teams had their own cheerleaders. The appearance of these new groups had evolved from the wholesome look of the Steelerettes to the Las Vegas showgirl look of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. The Rooney family had a problem with this.

The short life of the Pittsburgh Steelerettes was about to come to an end.
